Jail Clerk

Under minimal supervision, Jail Clerks perform a wide variety of responsible and complex clerical duties necessary to the incarceration and release of inmates. Jail Clerks are responsible for conducting transactions with other employees or the public in matters requiring detailed knowledge of laws, rules, procedures, policies, precedents, and activities, and for supplying information involving facts and interpretations.

Examples of Duties

  • Completing booking sheets, warrants, teletypes, and bail information.
  • Reading and interpreting complex court orders.
  • Counting and recording large sums of money for inmate cash accounts and bail.
  • Auditing files for accuracy of data entry, paperwork, sentencing, and release information.
  • Monitoring officer staging area for problems and requesting back-up help as needed.
  • Maintaining the control panel to operate cameras and doors to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Jail Clerks work rotating schedules and provide continuous 24-hour coverage.
