Specialized Teams

Dive Team

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has an eight-person dive team, comprised of a team leader, divemaster, and six other divers. All divers are sworn staff. The team trains during most months throughout the year in preparation for team call-outs. They receive additional training in ice dives, underwater evidence recovery, dry-suit certification, and advanced open water diving.

The Dane County Dive Team Mission

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team's mission is to make every effort to locate and recover victims and/or evidence submerged in any body of water in Dane County or another county/municipality in Wisconsin upon request for mutual aid. Divers abide by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office core values and are committed to supporting a safe and equitable community through professional service and partnerships.

K9 Unit

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has used canines since as early as 1901. The current K-9 program has been in place since 1982, making it the longest-serving K-9 Unit in Dane County.

Many dedicated deputies and canines have served on the unit over the years. The K-9 Unit currently consists of five teams. Each team consists of a handler (deputy) and their canine partner. There are three patrol teams, one explosives detection team, and one search and rescue team.

Dane County K9

Dane County K9 an organization comprised entirely of volunteers dedicated to helping the Dane County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit meet its current and long-term funding needs. Dane County K9 has filed for non-profit status – 501(c)3.

Funding received through Dane County K9 helps purchase special equipment, pay for advanced training, and offset other costs the handlers would incur personally without the assistance of Dane County K9. To make a donation to the organization, please visit their website here.

Motorcycle Unit

The use of the motorcycle was re-established in 2000 when the Sheriff’s Office was afforded the opportunity to lease two new Harley Davidson police motorcycles. The lease program through Capital City Harley Davidson allows for the Sheriff’s Office to obtain motorcycles at a fraction of the cost of purchasing them, thereby making them a very affordable vehicle.

The motorcycles are seen by the public in many events throughout the year, catching the eye of children and adults alike. The police motorcycle affords a unique opportunity for positive interaction with the citizens of Dane County.

Deputies who have completed the intense two-week Police Motorcycle Operators Course conducted jointly by Northwestern University Traffic Institute and Harley Davidson Motor Company also use the motorcycles for traffic enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Team uses the motorcycles extensively as a very effective enforcement tool. Police motorcycles are also used for effective and efficient dignitary escorts.
